At the World 600 in Charlotte, South Carolina Glenn "Fireball" Roberts lived up to his name dying from critical burns in a crash with Junior Johnson and Ned Jarrett.

The 1963 Grand National champion Nascar winner, Joe Weatherly, was also was killed in a crash at Riverside Speedway.a scene of disaster for Ford.
