1968 came the second generation Pontiac GTO. Adding more curvaceous fastback styling, new dual hood scoops, hidden headlights, first with hidden windshield wipers, and an optional lighted tachometer embedded in the hood. The major sales pitch was the body-color Endura front bumper designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at low speeds.
Evel Knievel, a nobody at the time, scammed Caesars' Palace owner Jay Sarno with bogus phone calls claiming to be various lawyers and reporters. It paid off and Sarno gave him the green light to jump the fountain in front of the hotel. Knievel failed, he crushed his pelvis, femur, fractured his hip, wrist and both ankles and was in a coma for a month. A life long successful career based on failure after failure after failure. Only in America!
